In the darkroom this week I’ve been working on a print of this shot. After a couple of tries, I think it’s getting close to what I’m after. Once I’ve created a print map with an 8×10, it’s time to move on to making the “real” print on 11×14 paper.

That’s Okanagan Lake in the background with the city of Penticton along its shoreline.
I made a print of this negative, which I’m quite pleased with. It was relatively easy. The main challenge was to retain the highlights in the foreground bunch grass while adding contrast to the rest of the scene. A little burning of the sky was also needed to even out the overall contrast. Both these tasks were made easier by using split-grad printing.

The end of one year and the start of another is always a great time to reflect, take stock, and reconsider. Looking back on the photos I posted in 2020, these are the ones I like the best of all on the first day of 2021.
