I’m pretty sure this isn’t Mount Garabaldi, but what is it? Mamquam Mountain perhaps? If anyone can identify it, leave a comment below. All I remember (and I must try to make better notes in future) is that I shot it off the Sea to Sky Highway from a location probably north of Squamish.

Favourite Cameras: Olympus Stylus Zoom 80 Wide DLX

I was all set to write a quick review after running a roll through the Olympus Stylus Zoom 80 Wide DLX. The review I wrote in my head was simply, I didn’t like using this camera. Everything that makes the legendary Olympus Stylus Epic such a joy to shoot with, is missing with its zoom-lensed big brother. Where the Stylus Epic is small, light and quick, the Stylus Zoom 80 is chunky, heavy and slow. So, is that the entire review? Not quite. Continue reading

But there’s light on the horizon. And storm clouds. Confusing.

Favourite Cameras: Kuribayashi Karoron

The Kuribayashi Karoron is a bit of a mystery camera. I first heard about the brand because of my dad. While serving in the Korean war, he spent a little time in Tokyo, where he purchased a Karoron. Much later, that camera found its way into my collection and once I got it working again, it delivered some very pleasing results. Continue reading

Up the Lake

Okanagan Lake

Okanagan Lake, B.C. (Camera: Olympus 35RC; Film: Ilford XP2 Super 400)

I saw an on-line “review” of the nifty new Leica black-and-white digital camera last week. The shadow regions were crushed in every one of the accompanying sample images. I thought it was amusing that the same folks who howl with outrage over slightly blown highlights seem to embrace clipped shadows. Personally, I prefer to retain detail at both ends of the luminance range. But clearly that’s a matter of taste.

Cashmere Back Alley

I always find back alleys fascinating. They offer a kind of “behind the scenes” perspective of a city or town. It’s the bit you’re not really meant to see, but which often reveals some elemental truth about a place.
