White Lake Dream
A number of factors contribute to the dreamlike mood of this photo. The lighting, obviously. The camera’s native vignetting. And the fact that I missed focus, rendering the details soft. All these factors worked against the original colour version of this shot, but somehow the black-and-white conversion flips all these negatives into positives to yield something I quite like.

Lady’s Mantle
There’s something extra water repellent about this plant’s foliage that allows rain drops to bead up extraordinarily well. I wish I had a rain coat that worked liked that.

Wide-angle Point-and-Shoot Showdown
Without planning to, I’ve accumulated a small collection of point-and-shoot zoom cameras with wide angle capabilities. There’s a good reason for that. These are the Swiss Army knife of the photographic world. And while the spoon or fork found on a multi-tool, isn’t the best spoon or fork ever, in a pinch they’re better than nothing. And so it is with point-and-shoot zoom cameras — they can do a bit of everything reasonably well. Continue reading
