Smith Rock Sunset
I visited Oregon once again, this time for the August 21 solar eclipse. The spectacular, red sunsets we “enjoyed” were the worrying results of several huge, nearby forest fires.

Eclipse Awe
The most recent total eclipse I experienced prior to the August 21 event was in 2015. I watched the Moon cover the Sun from a hotel near the Vágar airport in the Faroe Islands. The guy in this photo is a D.J. from Berlin. He flew in on the morning of the eclipse, walked across the road to where we were set up at the hotel, photographed the eclipse, then packed up his gear and walked back across the road to the airport and caught the next flight home to Germany. Total time in the Faroe Islands: three hours. Now that’s what I call efficient eclipse chasing!

Geyser Eclipse
Thinking about the August 21 total eclipse. In this photo the Sun is (partially) eclipsed by an eruption of the Strokkur geyser. While a real solar eclipse is a rare thing, a Strokkur eclipse happens roughly once every seven minutes.
