Blue Bridge Detail

Johnson Street Bridge, Victoria, B.C. (Camera: Kodak Retina IIIc; Film: Kodak Ektar 100)

The famed “Blue Bridge,” a.k.a. the Johnson Street Bridge, isn’t long for this world, for reasons that this photo probably makes clear. A little known fact is that this structure was designed by Joseph Strauss, the chief engineer behind the considerably more elegant (and famous) Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The Johnson Street Bridge opened in 1924, though it was only painted blue in 1979. Its replacement is being built along side it but is (to no one’s surprise) over budget and behind schedule.

I wonder if the guys doing the modelling here ever imagined they’d end up splattered with mud at a construction site.
