Welcome to the Era of Stunt Photography

Light-leaked photo of San Jose, Costa Rica. (Camera: Olympus XA-2; Film: Kodak T-Max 100)

Maybe it’s just me. But it seems we’re being buffeted mightily by the winds of what I’d call (for lack of a better descriptor) “stunt photography.” It’s everywhere on-line these days and if you tune in to sites like Petapixel you’ll see examples posted almost daily. On the Gorge With the Belair

(Camera: Lomography Belair; Lens: 58mm f/16; Film: Lomography Color 100)

The poor ol’ Lomography Belair has taken quite a beating in reviews and on-line discussion forums almost from the day it was first announced. Even my own review (Part 1 of which is found here), has plenty of unkind things to say. But, as the picture above shows, if you take into account the camera’s limitations, it’s still possible to make pleasing pictures with it. And really, isn’t that how you have to work with all cameras? Yes, shocking though it may be to say, even Leicas have limitations. I’m not saying this photo is great art, but its shortcomings (whatever they may be) are clearly the fault of the guy pointing the camera, not the camera itself.
